Society is traditionally divided into binaries of rich and poor, the upper and the lower strata, or even the rulers and the ruled. Such divisions are popular with social scientists, but there is another division of society, in three layers of existence, which is found operating in any set up.
The By-products.
The Producers.
The Critics.
The Theory of a Three Layered Set up, which is universally applicable to all the societies across the globe, is comparatively new to thinking and discerning minds.
The Byproducts
The byproducts are the people who can be compared to the growth on the surface of the earth. They have no power to question the kind of earth from which they are growing, nor can they alter their own constituting factors, because their composition is dependent on the earth from where they erupt.
These byproducts add to the beauty of the earth, feel attracted to each other, write and dance, and create a semblance of joy on the surface of the earth, though they are keenly aware that they have no power over several things, particularly what they inhere from the earth. They acquire great capabilities, and accomplish things which go down in history as great events. But they remain ineffective so far as the change in their own constitution is concerned, nor they have the power to question the earth below their feet. Between the earth and the sky, they move in great numbers, as people who suck the elements, and do what is socially right or not right for them, fight, win or lose, and pray to gods, for their own good and evil. All people across all genres who know how not to get into any confrontation, even if it means a calculated silence, which kills them from inside.
The Producers:
If there are products and by products, there has to be some manured fields where this silent, and wise growth takes place. It is the earth, the base of the society, the ground in which ideas, ideologies, and ideals are lying buried. We should not forget the earth, which we often romanticise, is actually a mix-up, a blend of all that was rejectable in the social set up. When a man becomes useless and declared dead, he goes straight into the grave. When we have eaten the bananas, the flaps and the envelop go straight to the earth. What we cannot digest and turn into blood, is turned over to the earth. The buildings when start wearing down, finally crumble into the earth. All the structures including men and ideas, finally go down into the earth, and form a breathing mass, which shapes the growth that comes up as human beings, their ideas and ideologies, who love and fight, and come up with grandiose thoughts. The society which breeds such plants has its own compulsion. The toxicity of the earth flows into the blood of its people, who know, if they fight the toxic elements, they would fall into trouble. In a way, it is complicity. Just as there are hundreds of movements within the womb of the earth, and the birth of men on its surface is no simple affair, so is our society, as mysterious, and as ominous.
The Critics:
The Critics are a class who come from this society, and grow up among the ranks of these harmless millions, but who have an understanding of the toxic waste of the earth, and who also empathise with the millions whose tongue lacks muscle. These are the men who have a back bone, and who stand on their own, and carry a mirror which reflects back the real face of the earth, and its wild and aimless growth. Poets, philosophers, writers, thinkers, actors, - who know what is wrong with the earth, and what is wrong with the harmless ranks, try to change the constitution of the earth, and the mental strains of the mass. These are the people who fight the battle of the civilization and check its drift into meaninglessness.
If the world is moving forward, and if we find some meaning left in it, it is because of this vanguard of philosophers and critics, who have stood their ground, and challenged the winds. They are not many, but they had the force to stop the tide.
Choice:
Every one of us, who studies and graduates from Universities, or thinks hard on the existential axis of life, has the choice, to become a helpless slave of the formation, or to stand in front of it, challenge it, and reconstitute the mass from which future generations will erupt.
