Poem in Cypriot by Maroulla Panagou

CYPRIOT GREEK is the variety of Modern Greek that is spoken by the majority of the Cypriot populace and Greek Cypriot diaspora. It is considered a divergent dialect as it differs from Standard Modern Greek in various aspects of its lexicon, phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and even pragmatics not only for historical reasons but also because of geographical isolation, and extensive contact with typologically distinct languages. It has traditionally been placed in the southeastern group of Modern Greek varieties. Though Cypriot Greek tends to be regarded as a dialect by its speakers, it is unintelligible to speakers of Standard Modern Greek without adequate prior exposure.

The bio fight.
This cold-faced wretch,
which he ordered to take of his followers.
Closing him with this is how I want it
outside his house the door.
Found in deep water
and by necessity he learned to float
(Otherwise it would sink),
who became a great swimmer.
Champion!
With a bunch of medals
and a head full of experience.
High school diploma with honors
in the study of life,
which end of the shoot
respect is due to him
and takes off his hat
in his name.
The stringla that almost drowned him,
disappeared from the face of the earth
and he doesn't even imagine
that to a degree he is grateful to her.
For the forced struggle,
The iron will he acquired
and what he learned along the way.
